General Motors Accelerates Rollout of Electric and Intelligent Connected Vehicles in China

  • Over 15 Ultium-based EVs across brands to be launched by 2025
  • Debut of Chevrolet FNR-XE highlights global resources and local capability
  • GM’s new software-defined vehicle platform to be introduced next year

SHANGHAI – General Motors shared its progress toward its global vision of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion at GM China Tech Day 2022 in Shanghai. It announced the plan to roll out more than 15 Ultium-based models in China by 2025, and reinforced its commitment to making electric vehicles more connected and intelligent.

“With our disruptive technologies coming to life, we are seeing the most profound and immense transformation ever in the automotive industry,” said Mary Barra, GM chair and CEO. “GM is determined to lead the transformation and ultimately create a better, safer and more sustainable world for our customers and generations to come.”

Advancing an all-electric future

Leading the charge is GM’s revolutionary Ultium platform. It is the industry’s first hyperscale EV platform designed with flexibility and modularity at its core, providing the power, range and performance to make nearly every vehicle an EV.

The rapid scaling of the Ultium lineup lays out the breadth and depth of its bandwidth. Its portfolio ranges from the Cruise Origin AV and BrightDrop commercial vehicles, to the GMC HUMMER EV supertruck and Chevrolet Silverado EV, and the Cadillac CELESTIQ ultra-luxury flagship revealed in October.

“GM is accelerating the introduction of Ultium-empowered EVs in China to support the market’s move toward an all-electric future,” said Julian Blissett, GM executive vice president and president of GM China. “Through global collaboration and local integration, we are unlocking a transformative experience with real-world benefits for our customers through zero-emission driving.”

Following the Cadillac LYRIQ all-electric intelligent SUV, which started customer deliveries in September, a wide spectrum of Ultium-based models across brands, segments and body styles are ready for massive rollout in China. The Cadillac CELESTIQ showcased at the 5th China International Import Expo will be the first product to be brought in by The Durant Guild – GM’s new lifestyle platform. The first Ultium-based Buick model will debut in China later this year.

The Ultium-empowered Chevrolet FNR-XE concept, which was revealed at Tech Day 2022, represents the brand’s significant next step forward toward a greener future. It also previews Chevrolet’s new generation of electric intelligent connected vehicles custom developed for the Chinese market.

Making EVs smarter and more connected

GM is stepping up the development and rollout of software-defined vehicles to meet customers’ evolving needs for a digital lifestyle. Its new software-defined vehicle platform will be introduced in North America and China next year. The platform will enable frequent and seamless updates of apps and services over the air, ensuring users have access to the most innovative experiences and technologies.

In the meantime, GM has been leading the responsible deployment of automated driving technologies in China. It is strengthening customer trust through the introduction of an enhanced version of the Super Cruise driver assistance system. The new features, including lane change on demand and automatic lane change, give customers even more comfort and confidence.

Currently available on selected Cadillac models, enhanced Super Cruise will be featured on the brand’s entire lineup by 2025. In addition, it is being introduced on Buick models beginning later this year and those from Chevrolet afterward to provide greater accessibility to GM customers.
