Acquired for “Project for Urban Implementation of Advanced Technical Services such as 5G in Nishi -Shinjuku” -5G to provide automatic delivery service by delivery robot

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., Tier IV, KDDI Corporation, Sompo Japan Insurance Inc., menu Inc., and Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. proposed an automatic delivery service on September 12, 2022, in Nishi-Shinjuku, Tokyo. Adopted as a project for urban implementation of advanced technology services such as 5G that contributes to problem solving *1. For a certain period of time, the six companies will use delivery robots to automatically deliver meals and medicines to people living and working in Nishi-Shinjuku (hereinafter referred to as this initiative). We will identify business, operational, and technical issues and aim to provide continuous services in the Nishi-Shinjuku area and expand services to other areas in Tokyo as soon as possible.

Background Purpose

With the declining birthrate and aging population, labor shortages in the logistics industry have become a social issue. Demand for logistics is expected to grow further in the future, such as the recent expansion of the use of online shopping. . In the Tokyo metropolitan area, initiatives are being promoted for the urban implementation of cross-sectoral services that utilize 5G and advanced technology in the Nishi-Shinjuku area. Based on the service and technology verification results2 obtained by running delivery robots on designated routes in FY2021, the six companies will implement urban delivery services using delivery robots that utilize 5G and advanced technology in the Nishi-Shinjuku area.
